Are The Bleu Jayz what hiphop needs?

Well, here we are again. I’ll be honest, I wasn’t sure what to expect when the up and coming hiphop group out of Atlanta asked me to review their new album. My first official album review in years. I’m glad this is where I’m bringing it back!

First thing that comes to mind is the 90s and the dedication to real rap and real rhymes. They hit your ears hard from the start with the “Killa Note“. It’s them letting you know hey…. We got talent and we will show it. The story telling of the struggle has never been one I immediately gravitate to, but here? It’s done with taste and creativity, mixed in with two very authentic voices? You have a product people will love. Og and solo as they go by, must have a producer locked in a basement because they have the tricky art of beat selections and placing sounds in the right order on a album down pact.

OG, half of the bleu jayz has a flow that reminds me of Don Toliver, someone I smoke too a lot. And that’s not a bad thing. Name 5 people who can sound like that and actually make good music? Sometimes comparison is okay if you ask me. Songs like my type of girl show me these two can stand alone on group records.

Solo is someone I’ve known for years. So I know what he can do in the booth. However, there is a clear progression here between what I’ve heard before and what I’m hearing now. Songs like “fire power “ are where you hear the back and fourth, I feel is where solo shines. The energy he brings with the playa flow and the tone and voice control is exactly what a paring like this should have.

A longer project for a newer group, and that is okay. This is actually art, it’s a story and I feel and understand why they chose to not cut corners. All the features sound good, amazing beats selection, and the features all work. Im happy this is a complete project.

I love how the middle of the album hits a little smooth pocket of pop like beats on “we gone make it” it’s important for projects this long to always have a little bit of everything. And sure, it sounds like a duh thing. But it’s not always something newer acts know! So it’s nice to hear a long project and not be bored 6 songs in. Thank you for that.

Overall I love this project. Maybe a little longer than what I personally would like for a newer act, but it’s 18 tracks of good music and for that I salute these guys. It’s hip hop. Period. In this new school world of two minute songs and no real art? I love to see acts like the Bleu Jayz keeping it true to the art form. This is definitely a project with replay value! I can wait too see what’s next for this duo!!
